Call for Entries: Center for Fine Art Photography

Theme: Consumption
Deadline: April 13
Consumpition is a multifaceted term. While it can signify the influence of advertising and marketing on our pervasive consumer culture, the word also speaks to profound human instincts. To be consumed by something-be it illness, emotions, or beliefs-is to oftentimes confront one's realities. What, why, when, and how we consume determines the ramifications of the choices we make. Additionally, consumption can simply suggest a transformation. The Center is looking for images that visually depict Consumption and what it means to you.

State cracking Down on Photographers?

Dann Coffey, a commercial photographer based in Edwards, is protesting a recent state audit. He doesn't charge customers sales taxes on his photography because it's a service, he said.

But state auditors said he owes up to $3,000 in taxes, interest and fees on his resale of stock photos from previous shoots going back to 2006. Coffey said he's selling a license to use the images and he retains the copyright, so the resales shouldn't be taxed; the state said the transactions constitute the taxable sale of tangible property.

ASMP Colorado Member Psihoyos Takes Home Oscar

"Bringing together a team of law-breakers to do something awesome" is how interviewer Mali Elfman puts it. Louie agrees.

Psihoyos, of Boulder, had a long still photography career before signing on to direct 2009's Best Documentary, The Cove, about the capture and killing of wild dolphins in a hidden cove in Japan.

Many years at National Geographic and a brilliant career as an editorial shooter primed Louie to dive into something even more important: The turbulent seas of ecology and animal rights.
